There are an awful lot of fish foods on the market. Store shelves and online retailers offer so many different options, all in eye-catching packaging with pictures of healthy, brilliantly colored fish on the front.
Don’t be fooled by slick marketing and packaging. There are major brands of fish food using low-quality ingredients (more on this later). Ignore the pictures of happy fish on the front, and take a look at the ingredients list on the back, that’s what is really important.
To make it easier for you, I purchased 32 types of fish food, checked their ingredients and split them up into different categories based on fish size.
To navigate this article, you can use the links below to skip to the section related to the size of your fish.

How To Analyze and Judge Fish Food Quality
The main factors that determine whether a fish food is right for your tank are:
Getting The Right Size Food For Your Fish
You can have the most amazing food in the world, but if it’s the wrong size for your fish’s mouth, they can’t eat it, and it’s worthless. For this article, we purchased each different kind of food and took reference photos to show the size.
I’ve split the different sizes into four categories:
- Nano – 1-2 inches (2.5-5 centimeters) – These are the truly tiny guys, like chili rasboras and neon tetras. Their small size means that food must be miniscule to fit in their mouths. Crushed flakes, powdered foods and micro pellets work best.
- Small – >2-3 inches (>5-7.5 centimeters) – These species are a bit bigger, like guppies and platy fish, but still tiny enough that their food needs to be in very small pieces. Crushed up flakes and small pellets work best.
- Medium – >3-5 inches (>7.5-13 centimeters) – Most fish foods are designed to feed fish this size. Flakes and small to medium pellets work best.
- Large – >5 and larger (>13 centimeters) – Bigger fish can often eat foods made for smaller fish, but it’s a lot more efficient to feed them foods designed for their large mouths.
The First Ingredient Is The Most Important
Cheap fish foods use low quality ingredients. The first ingredient listed will be something like generic fish meal, and fillers like corn or soy.
Yes, these foods will keep your fish from starving to death, but they’re the equivalent of a human eating nothing but hot dogs all the time.
Generic fish meal is the leftovers of fish carcasses after the meat and oil have been removed. It’s the guts, bones and scales, essentially, the trash from harvesting the edible parts of a fisherman’s catch.
Some parts are completely indigestible, like scales, fins and teeth, and will just pass through the fish’s digestion as waste, contributing to the bioload of the aquarium without providing any meaningful nutrition.
If generic fish meal is the first ingredient of a fish food, I would recommend skipping it, and look for something that provides higher quality nutrition.
Whole ingredients, like whole fish, shrimp or krill, contain more usable protein than fish carcasses that have been stripped of all their meat.
As well, non-aquatic fillers like soy and corn can’t really be broken down by a fish’s digestive system, so they just become waste, creating more poop, but providing very few actual nutrients.
The foods on this list were all individually chosen because they are made from high quality protein sources and aren’t packed with fillers.
Feeding Method
Fish don’t all feed in the same way. Some eat at the surface, some want to sweep in and grab food that’s floating in the middle of the water column and some want to eat food that is laying along the substrate.
The foods listed in this article are denoted as follows:
- Floating – these foods will remain floating for an extensive period of time. These are good for surface feeding fish.
- Slow sinking – OK manufacturers call these foods “slow sinking,” but these foods float briefly and then still sink to the bottom pretty quickly. These are good foods for fish that like to grab food from the mid-water.
- Sinking – just like the name says, these foods immediately sink to the substrate. These foods are best for bottom dwelling fish, like catfish.
- Gel food – this kind of food is in powder form, which you mix with hot water, and it then forms a kind of a fish food Jello. Fish of all sizes can eat gel food. Little fish nibble on it and big fish gulp it up in big chunks. You can just drop chunks into the tank or even coat things like tiles or small pieces of driftwood, so suckermouth fish can scrape it off to eat.

A Varied Diet is Best
It’s best to feed fish a diet made up of as many different quality food sources as you can.
It’s just like with people. Oranges are a good healthy food, but they shouldn’t be the only thing that you eat. A healthy diet should be made up of a variety of different foods in order to make sure that you get the nutrients your body needs.
Fish are no different. It’s especially. To feed them. Several different kinds of animal proteins and plant-based foods to ensure they get all of the nutrition that they need.
Thank you for this list, I have spent a lot of time looking for the best food to feed my wet pets. You’ve made my job much easier. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
Thank you so much for the list and comparisons. I’m always looking for good foods to feed my Aquatic Pals. I made the mistake of buying a major brand that was on sale that started with an A and ended with an N *Coughs* “Aqueon” and one of their Algae wavers, just one, decimated my nano tank and spiked the ammonia so high that I lost 5 out of 6 of my neon tetras. I liked that you singled out the ingredients that we need to look out for in mass quantities. Bug Bites are by far my main go-to for my fish, but I may try Omega One Veggie Rounds after reading your review of them.
Thanks!
